Abstract
This article offers a philosophical and literary reflection on the condition of old age in human existence, focusing on its marginalization in contemporary societies. It analyzes the displacement of the figure of the elderly person — once regarded as wise — toward an invisible and discarded representation within a context that privileges youth, productivity, and autonomy. The analysis centers on Tomás González’s novel El fin del océano Pacífico, in which fragility, finitude, and decay are explored as existential categories, and contrasts it with Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, where old age is eliminated in a dystopian narrative. From a hermeneutic approach, the discussion engages with philosophical contributions by Epicurus, Cicero, Simone de Beauvoir, Robert Redeker, Hannah Arendt, Martha Nussbaum, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Byung - Chul Han. The findings suggest that the marginalization of old age expresses a deeper rejection of human finitude and that reclaiming the dignity of aging is essential to rethinking ethical, educational, and cultural perspectives.
